WOW! 2019 has been huge for me. I’ve had so many exciting experiences and met incredibly inspirational people. There are far too many experiences for me to list in one blog, but I can hit the highlights. So, here they are in no particular order:
#1 2019 Vitality Netball World Cup
It is no big surprise what my first highlight of the year is: attending the Netball World Cup in Liverpool as a match reporter for Netball Scoop. This once-in-a-lifetime experience lived up to all my expectations. Yes, it was exhausting (on average I walked 10km a day, climbed over 11 flights of stairs and was up writing until 1am most days) but the atmosphere and the sheer joy of being there far outweighed the negatives. I highly recommend any sports fan attend a world cup or pinnacle sporting event at least once in their life. Competition aside, the party vibes, gratitude of the less-fortunate athletes and stories you hear, are a combination you won’t find in any other environment.
#2 Joining a business networking group
This year, by chance, I ran into a friend’s mum who asked me to come along to a business networking meeting. I was sceptical about it as I didn’t think it was something that my business would benefit from, despite her mentioning that they were after someone of my particular skills set. But I went along and was pleasantly surprised. The businesses within this group are genuinely interested in helping boost sales for each other. After a few weeks, and a change of circumstances, I signed up. My business has blossomed ever since. It is like having 30+ marketing elves out there searching for new business for me.

#3 Moving out of the home office
This highlight was directly caused by highlight #2. I have been a bit quiet about it because I am still in the process of fitting out my office, so I’m not ready to share photos of it just yet. But, moving out of my home office and into a space in the business district of town has been a huge weight off my shoulders. I am more productive and feel more professional now that I can say to clients, ‘just, pop by my office.’ And we are right next door to a fantastic coffee shop!!
If you are in Mackay, come see me at Shop 6, 43 Wood Street. We’ll get coffee first haha.
#4. Collaborations & new relationships
This year I have thoroughly enjoyed collaborating with several different professionals. At the World Cup, the majority of our Netball Scoop team gathered in my room at the end of each day’s play to write the daily wrap and view photos. Back on Aussie shores, I have met numerous new clients and marketing professionals. We have gathered at coffee shops and libraries all over Mackay to talk about their businesses and the ways we could work together. Each encounter featured contributions from everyone which saw the melding of ideas and articles which were unique and captured emotions and personalities.
Throughout the whole of 2019, I have grown so much as a writer and business professional. At the beginning of the year, I was suffering a little from imposter syndrome and lacked confidence in my abilities. Despite having the qualifications, I still felt like I was out of my depth on more than one occasion.
But, thanks to all my experiences this year and conversations where I have shared my knowledge and proven to myself (more than anyone else) that I am in the right field, those feelings are now gone. I know that I will never stop learning and growing as a writer, which is why I can say with absolute certainty that 2020 will be even more exciting and bring more opportunities for me to share my gift. I can’t wait!!
